ArtSees Diner is proud to announce that Douglas "The Chef" Rapier's newest literary endeavor,
the novel, "Ovoid Illinois"

'Ovoid, Illinois' is set in a microscopically small town in the American Midwest of the late 1960’s. The tale tells of the final high school year of Cheryl-Jean Billingham, cheerleader, aspiring journalist and daughter of the ambitious ex-mayor and Duncan Reynard, singer, musician and eldest son of the town barber. Although of different social circles and circumstances, the two are brought together in a bitter-sweet romance by controversy resulting from faculty in-fighting regarding the high school musical. Cheryl-Jean takes it upon herself to fight on behalf of Duncan, who she feels has been slighted. She quickly finds herself embroiled in faculty politics, small town political wrangling and the larger societal picture of the tumultuous 1960’s. She is faced with the dilemma of creating a rift between herself and her loving yet patronizing father, undermining her own social status and taking a principled stand in defending both Duncan and the high school’s music director, Gordon Lehmann. Mr Lehmann, a closeted homosexual, is the target of a witch-hunt lead by the self-righteous and self-promoting, drama teacher, Mrs. Thalia Beaudelaire, who hopes to gain social prominence by threatening to ‘out’ him.
Ovoid, Illinois is further populated by quirky, small-town eccentrics, religious fanatics, religious iconoclasts, fractious immigrants, drunks, war heroes, war protestors, cheerleaders, football jocks, nascent hippies, novice fascists, a teen megalomaniac, an over-weight and over-bearing sheriff, a sexually over-active vice-principal and a hard rock band which makes music so loud and so bizarre that it drives domestic animals to a primal frenzy.
Ovoid, Illinois; a place of quiet, pastoral tradition.
Ovoid, Illinois; a real nice place to raise your kids.
Ovoid, Illinois; a place and a state of mind that most of the kids are frantic to escape from.

Douglas's Poetry

Empty

It’s been too long a time since I had you by my side

Ramblin’ and roamin’ hasn’t left me satisfied

I want to drink a deep draught from your lovin’ cup

Only your mercy can fill me up

chorus

I’m feelin’ empty; Hollow as a big kick drum

So very empty; Hollow as a big kick drum

Only hope I have is the change I pray is gonna come

Starin’ out the window of a great big department store

For the life of me I can’t remember what I came here for

There ain’t nothin’ they could sell me that would soothe my soul

You got the only mojo that can make me whole

I’m feelin’ empty; Hollow as a tollin’ bell

So very empty; Hollow as a tollin’ bell

Only hope I have is that you save me from this living hell

Drivin’ down the highway and I’m pushing 125

Prayin’ that the danger’s gonna make me feel alive

Then the engine sputters as the gasket blows

A thousand miles from nowhere and the motor froze

I’m feelin’ empty; Hollow as a broken vow

So very empty; Hollow as a broken vow

I can hardly hope that your love is gonna save me now

Hey, Mister

Hey, Mister! When you gonna walk upon the water?

Hey, Mister! When you gonna turn that water to wine?

Take that wine and do some transubstantiation.

Don’t want no prophesies and signs.

Hey, Mister! How you wanna share the loaves and fishes?

Hey, Mister! Are you gonna win their hearts and minds?

The bakerman is gonna want remuneration.

All the fisherman’s got is salt and brine.

Hey, Mister Moneybags! Can’t you spare a quarter?

Hey, Mister Politician! Can’t you spare the time?

Time has come for you to make your restitution.

Don’t want to hear you moan and whine.

Hey, Mister! How we gonna part the rising water?

Hey, Mister! How we gonna stem the cresting tide?

Time & Tide don’t wait on our deliberations.

The tide is up and the river is wide.

Ill-gotten Gains

You may steal from the destitute and rob from the blind

Your heart is as black as the Peabody mine.

You may clear-cut the forest and poison the rain

May you find ever-lasting mis’ry in your ill-gotten gains

You may broker the future for a few dollars more

You insist that’s just what the future is for

You may lie with the best of them for fortune and fame

May you find ever-lasting mis’ry in your ill-gotten gains

Ill-gotten Gains

Ill-gotten Gains

Ill-gotten Gains

Ill-gotten Gains

May you find ever-lasting mis’ry in your ill-gotten gains

You may never understand what you learned as a child

“Live and Let Live” has never gone out of style

You may be the very last of us to go down the drain

May you find ever-lasting mis’ry in your ill-gotten gains

Ill-gotten Gains

Ill-gotten Gains

Ill-gotten Gains

Ill-gotten Gains

May you find ever-lasting mis’ry in your ill-gotten gains

May you find ever-lasting mis’ry in your ill-gotten gains

May you find ever-lasting mis’ry in your ill-gotten gains

 October Moon

I recall...

walking hand in hand

underneath a bright, silver moon

The air was scented with sweet perfume

As we strolled ‘neath the October Moon

I recall…

Looking into her eyes

On that night of the bright, silver moon

And the leaves rustled a fond farewell

As we paused ‘neath the October Moon

I recall…

Knowing our hearts were one

In the glow of the bright, silver moon

And the lawn felt like a feather-bed

As we lay ‘neath the October Moon

Our love blossomed in moonlight

But an early frost killed the bloom

I recall…

dreaming this memory

at a time when clouds hid the moon

And the sky wept as a lover would

For the dream ‘neath the October Moon

Older Than I look, Younger Thank I Feel

So, I’m strolling down the street the other day

A pretty little thing comes walking my way

I tip my hat n say ‘Howdee do?’

She eyeballs me as if to say ‘Dad, what’s got into you?’

I smile n shrug n shake it off; I got someplace to be

Gonna meet a friend of mine at a local eatery

I slide into the corner booth; check the specials of the day

When a 20-something waitress traipses over with her tray

I say ‘Howdy, Hon! You’re new here. Won’tcha tell me what’s your name?’

She puts down her tray, cocks her head n sneers ‘I don’t play that game.

Why, you’re old enough to be my dad. You oughta be ashamed.

I got a mind to call the cops.’ Yeah, she was that inflamed.

I throw up my hands, say ‘Ho-ho-hold it there. No need to be so rude.

I ain’t trying to make a play. I just wanna get some food

Since you’re new, you might not know I’ve been coming here for years.

And all that time, I’ve been watching myself grow old in the shaving mirror. I’ll tell you this:

I’m older than I look but I’m younger than I feel

I’m older than I look but I’m younger than I feel

I’m older than I look but I’m younger than I feel

(spoken) Right now, I feel like some Farina; a cup of broth; some dry toast, Metamucil…

Right then my oldest friend comes in and he’s looking rather glum.

He says, ’Y’know what I really miss the most ‘bout being young n dumb?’

I say ‘Tell me, son; might it be all the stupid shit we done?’

‘Well, there is that, my friend, but you gotta admit it was lotsa fun’!

But now;

I’m younger than I look but I’m older than I feel

I’m older than I look but I’m younger than I feel

I’m older than I look but I’m younger than I feel

(spoken) I feel like an 18-year-old; maybe two; one blonde, an’ …

Yeah, I know. Dream on, old man. Dream on…

Shame

Shame! It’s a shame.

Shame, shame, shame. It’s a dirty shame.

Somebody somewhere is taking somebody’s life.

Somebody, somewhere… Somebody, somewhere, Right now!

Somebody, somewhere is taking somebody’s life.

Now you might say, ”That’s the way things are.”

Yes, indeed, that’s the way it’s always been

But my brothers and my sisters, why must this tragedy go on?

Why do so many precious lives end in killing?

Killing somebody} (bgnd singers – call response)

Somebody they love

Somebody they hate

Somebody they don’t know

Somebody for the dough

Somebody for loving somebody else

Somebody for thinking a different way

Somebody with a gun

Somebody just for fun

With a car-bomb - Right now!

Somebody somewhere is taking somebody’s life
